In fall 2009, we announced the opening of our new reference laboratory (letter posted under “About Us”), thus providing a new option for your equine specialty testing needs. Our lab personnel have extensive experience performing the Sarcocystis neurona /EPM standard western blot and the Streptococcus equi /strangles SEM ELISA, both tests originating out of the Gluck Equine Research Center at the University of Kentucky. We also have many years of experience using molecular test formats like polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for equine infectious disease testing. This includes PCR for Streptococcus equi clinical cases or for identifying asymptomatic carriers.

As we expand our test menu, we are pleased to announce our latest additions. We are now offering PCR assays (real-time format) for:

• equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1), completing our neurologic panel
• virulent (vapA gene) Rhodococcus equi
• Salmonella spp.
• In development are assays for EHV-4 and equine influenza

Our strong ties to equine researchers will provide opportunities for the development of new tests for significant equine diseases. On the near horizon are new proprietary quantitative tests for S. neurona/EPM developed from the research of Dr. Dan Howe at the Gluck Center.
